Week Zero

Follow my process for creating something BIG!
Let’s start at zero.

Wherever there is space,
mind is present.”

My MFA Thesis Show is March 1st through March 7th, 2026

… leaving me 16 weeks (plus Week Zero) to prepare.

So I’m using this opportunity to create a process for this big project.

Along the way, I hope watching my process helps you to envision, plan and execute a big creative project, a series, or body of work of your own.

The concept of Week Zero came to me when I realized I was in the beginning of the week BEFORE my 16 weeks until my show.

I decided to use this extra week to rest, take stock, and get my head around the project. Then I realized there are SO many benefits of taking this time to just BE in “Week Zero” energy, before ideas, before planning, before budgets, before thinking, emotions, or action.

So here are the aspects of Week Zero I have come up with, which I recommend for you as you plan any new project. I’d love to hear your ideas, too.

Here are some Week Zero ideas:

  • Choose a thought to guide your week (this can change, and you can borrow mine!

    • Mine was: “I am gathering and becoming aware of my abundant resources.”

  • Breathe - just breathe.

  • Spend time in Yin Energy: Emptiness, Open, Receptive, Darkness

  • Go Inward: Look at what emotions or inner conversations you’ve been having, and sweep away the cobwebs.

  • Walk and just BE in Nature - just to feel beauty, joy, and connectedness with Nature as your Muse. Strengthening this connection will help you throughout the process.

  • Look at inspirational art without analyzing it

  • Surround yourself with quiet moments

  • Surround yourself with ancient shapes: Spirals, labyrinths, circles

  • Do some Automatic Writing, and Automatic Drawing of your project - or whatever else is on your mind to help clear the path. Morning Pages, journaling - whatever you want to call it.

  • Envision your project without any planning, just spend a few moments closing your eyes and walking through it in meditative, imaginative state.

  • Connect with ancestors or the spirit of historic mentors: Frida, Buddha, Artemesia, Vincent, whoever inspires you - ask for their thoughts and words of wisdom.

  • Take a coffee break and sit quietly, find calmness. Center and ground yourself.
